The NetGain Partnership focuses on challenges at the intersection of technology and the public interest. The partnership selects themes and works together to develop strategic frameworks to guide their investments and increase collaboration and learning across the digital field. Partners all pledge resources toward these shared strategies to tackle the most pressing challenges.

Partner foundations and their leaders also commit to shared exploration and learning about emerging issues at the intersection of technology and philanthropy.

The evolving digital landscape provides civil society and those working to advance the public interest with a fresh opportunity to change the course of digital society and build toward an equitable future.

The NetGain Partnership is leveraging this opportunity by focusing its work in 2024 on platform research, regulation and governance, and philanthropic engagement and education.

PREVIOUS THEMES

  • As the world began to emerge from the depths of the pandemic, NetGain sought to address the harms wrought by big tech and explore and advance meaningful reform. Through the united efforts of the NetGain partners, in collaboration with an aligned global network of interdisciplinary grantee partners, we seized the moment to hold platform companies accountable with the goal of preventing future harms and reclaiming digital technologies to strengthen our communities.

  • NetGain Partnership worked to amplify best practices in protecting information integrity online, reduce barriers to academic research on platform harms, and deploy resources for tactical support for tech-sector whistleblowers, especially with whistleblowers outside the United States.

To better address the growing influence of campaigns designed to destroy healthy information ecosystems online, the NetGain Partnership developed strategies that facilitated public interest research and greater transparency to identify and understand digital threats, inform effective solutions, and determine appropriate platform responsibilities to ensure the internet promotes an informed and engaged society.

  • Leveraging its leadership role and convening power, NetGain Partnership established a framework for platform accountability and addressing platform-related harms across communities and continents, facilitating alignment and shared understanding among civil society stakeholders.

NetGain worked to better understand digital threats to democracy, exploring a range of questions and solutions raised by civil society and researchers, through grantmaking, convening, research, shared learning and enhanced coordination among NetGain partners. NetGain’s pooled funding supported early-stage investment in new ideas, strategies, and campaigns.
